Can I Be A Model?

How can i become a model? What must I do to be a modelSo, can I be a model, and if so, what you can I do to make it happen?  The first answer is yes, and we will get to the second part of that question at the end of this phenomenal blog post.  It all comes down to the type of modeling you want to do, or the type that chooses you.  Even if you don’t not have much going for you in the looks or height department, there is always hand modeling. There are numerous types of modeling such as: print modeling, commercial modeling, runway, fitness modeling, high-fashion modeling, catalog, hand modeling etc. and the characteristics change from one type to another.

Now I am not going to go into great detail on all the characteristics of each field of modeling.  That is for another blog.  However, if you want to know more, author and photographer Joe Edelman writes on The Many Different Types of Modeling.  But the answer is yes, you too can become a model.  It just matters which field you choose, and which one best suits you.

Once again, there are many types of modeling and certain types of modeling call for certain features, and or characteristics, that are conducive with that field.  So not everyone can do all types of modeling. I mean, if everyone could be a successful high fashion model, you might see something like Beetlejuice cruising down the runway.  Clothes don’t sell when Beetlejuice is your top model.

Here is a little bit of what I am talking about.  Runway and high fashion modeling are typically more of a tall game (check out Why Do Models Have To Be Tall?).  Both usually call for men to be between the height of 5’11” and 6’2″ and women may be as tall, or slightly shorter. These models must typically be fit, but still slender.  So you look trim in the clothes, but toned in your naughty garments.  You must also have a good “look,” and by good “look” I mean, you must have attractive features.  This can mean features like, defined jaw structure, striking eyes, pleasant hair, full lips and symmetry in the face.  You don’t need to have all of them, but the more you have, the better off you will be.  People will see you in the clothes and You will make them want to buy them.  So it only makes sense that you have a good “look”.

Commercial modeling is more of a generic type of modeling (check out What Is Commercial Modeling?).  You don’t need to be 6’2″ and exotic.  Though, you still need to have the right look, meet a few of the features listed above, and have a great personality.  Commercial modeling is roughly 60% of what I do.  Most NY agencies turned me away and told me I was too “commercial”, which has actually worked out nicely for me.

I also do well in fitness modeling.  I made a good living off of being able to fit and fill out clothes better than all the other skinny boy and girl models.  Girls and guys who have a nice body will book more bathing suit, lingerie/underwear, and body work jobs which can make up a lot of the work out there.  Fitness modeling became a good niche for me.  I knew I could land a lot of jobs by being in great shape, and so I did.  There is no doubt that being in shape will help your modeling career.  For those of you who are interested in this, check out Jennifer Nicole Lee’s, The Fitness Model Program!

So the answer once again to the first question is, yes you can.  There are many different kinds of modeling out there.  Just because we only think of high fashion or runway models when we think of modeling, doesn’t mean that this is all there is.

How can I Become A ModelNow to answer the second part of our question…  So what can you do to make this happen?  The answer in this blog is simple, find your niche.  Find your field of modeling and take a step toward that goal everyday!  I know this isn’t exactly a step by step layout.  I will get to that in further blogs.  But this is your first step!  The truth is, this is exactly how you will become a great model.  Find your niche, get in shape, and do something toward your goal everyday.  There are many different types of modeling and you can find a perfect niche in one of them.  You just have to want it bad enough; and when you do, do it better than anyone else.  I remember going for jogs late at night on both Friday and Saturday because I knew that everyone else would be out drinking, partying and hindering their ability to be a great model.  For me, I was getting better and taking steps forward, while everyone else was getting worse and taking steps back.

As my father said to me “once you figure out what you want to do, take a step whether big or small, toward that goal everyday” (father, 2003).  My daily steps became fitness.  Hitting the gym and getting super duper jacked diesel (jk……      ..but seriously) so I could fit and fill out clothes better than anybody else.  You just got to take the time to find your niche!  Back To Modeling Wisdom

Respectfully,

Jonah Taylor

Hello, I’m interested in becoming a model, but I have stretch marks in various places on my body, a young-looking face (I look like thirteen, fourteen) I’m eighteen, not-so nice teeth but I do have a drive for this profession, I don’t know why, I can’t explain it, but I do.

Can I still become a model after all of this?
