Height, Age, and Measurement Requirements of Modeling.

what are the model measurements and requirements to be a modelHeight, Age, and Measurement Requirements of Modeling. So exactly how tall do you need to be to become a successful model? Likewise, how old does one need to be? What kind of body type is required? These are all important questions one will need to ask themselves if they are going to pursue modeling as a hobby or furthermore, a career. The ranges that will be specified are typical client requirements. That doesn’t mean you cannot succeed if you do not fit them. It also depends on which type of modeling you are pursuing. Keep these as guidelines and remember, there are always exceptions. (Experienceproject.com also has a nice little breakdown of some Modeling Measurements and Requirements).

Women – Because it is the most restrictive of all the modeling genres, let’s start with fashion models (high-end models typically shooting for editorials, high-end designers, runway and fashion campaigns). Fashion models have very particular age, height, and measurement standards. The typical age is 16-21. Models can be younger than this, but many agencies will require models to be at least 16. Likewise, models can be older but agencies and clients tend to like their models looking younger and more youthful. Height is typically between 5’9″-6″, bust is between 32″-36″, waist is between 22″-26″, and hips should be between 33″-35″. Of course most woman do not meet these standards and that is why fashion models generally get paid the most and work the most. If you do not meet these requirements, don’t worry, most women don’t.

Catalogue modeling is another lucrative modeling genre that is slightly less restrictive than fashion modeling. Height is generally between 5’8″ and 5’11” and typical measurements are as follows: Bust 32″-35″, hips 33″-35″, and waist 22″-26″. Catalogue and fashion are the two most specific modeling genres. That is why they are the most profitable.

Lingerie and Bikini models also tend to have specific measurement requirements. Typical lingerie measurements are: height 5’7″-6′, bust 32″-35″ C cup, waist 22″-26″, and hips 33″-35″. A bikini model will be similar to a lingerie model but with a slightly larger bust size.

There are also fields like fitness modeling, glamour, and plus-size modeling that do not require such specific measurements (check out Plus Size Modeling Requirements!)

On the other hand, whether it be fashion or catalogue, Men are pretty straight forward. Height is typically between 5’11”- 6’2″ and men should be able to fit into a 40″- 42″ Regular Jacket. Men should be fit and lean without too much muscle. The goal should be to look ripped with your shirt off, but lean in clothing (unless you are pursuing fitness modeling, then go on with those squats and deadlifts). Men’s standards are less specific and many men meet these guidelines. That is part of the reason why they often times get paid less than their women counterpart. If you are a male with a unique look, stand between 5’11”- 6’2″ and fit into a 40″- 42″ Regular Jacket, you have a great chance at becoming a model.

Now that you know the measurements I bet you are wondering “How Do I Get Started? Well, if this is you… check out How to Get Started Modeling!!

And if you find that you do not meet some of the required measurements and are still wondering, “Do I Have What It Takes To Be A Model? check out the many different types of modeling and see which one fits you best!!

You may find that the genre of modeling you like most is not the best fit, but that another fits you just perfect! So Get checking!!!

P.S. Modeling Wisdom is only an informational blog. It is NOT a modeling agency and cannot tell you whether you have what it takes to model or not. Modeling Wisdom CAN, however, provide you with the necessary steps to give modeling a try if you would still like to give modeling a shot! In the end, the only person who can tell you that you don’t have a shot is yourself. Believe in yourself and don’t stop until you have achieved your goal, no matter what they say!!

    Weight: 120
    Height: 5’3″
    Bust: 34, B cup

Should I bother trying? If so, what type of modeling would you recommend?

    • Jonah Levi Taylor

      Reply Reply January 6, 2014

The real question is whether you would enjoy it if you did go for it? If it is something you think you would love to do, then it is absolutely worth trying. If you are doing it because others are, or for any other reason than you want to, you need not bother. Seeing that you are on the shorter side, I would recommend petite modeling, fitness modeling, or even some commercial modeling. Give it a try!

      Reply Reply February 6, 2014

The first steps are either getting some professional photographs taken so you can take them to modeling agencies in your areas or show them to prospective clients. If you already have a few professional photos, then the next step is to take them to the agencies and see what they say. If they say the need more, get more. If they say we don’t need you, try another agency. Just be smart and get those photos!

These types of things are why girls suffer so greatly with self esteem… I don’t fit any of these requirements (except perhaps my age, 16) but I still feel beautiful! 🙂 if you are reading this and are like me, be happy! Because it is easier to find good people who will dig deep and love you for who you are, not just because you look good! 🙂 And please be happy you have, for example, legs that work! 😀 Even if they’re not skinny or have stretchmarks on them (like me!) 😉 A great number of people are wheelchair bound and wished, even if they were the ugliest in the entire world, they had legs to walk with. So please don’t feel like you’re not good enough, because your so much more than that! 🙂 lots of love

No Jazmine, that would not be a smart idea. You start off slow and build up your reputation. School is way more important because modeling will not last forever, but your education will. Great question!

I’m 18, 5’11, and 130 lbs. I am rather bustier, with a 36c (maybe even D if we’re talking about VS bras). Most models who are 5’11 aren’t 130lbs so will this cause a problem if I pursue modeling? Thanks!

    • Jonah Levi Taylor

      Reply Reply April 28, 2014

This shouldn’t cause you too much of a problem, especially as models are beginning to be “bustier” in general. In fact, in certain markets, this may even be a good thing. One thing every model should do is try to find something that sets them apart from the rest of the field. Do not sorry too much over this and simply go for it. You can do it!

so im told by alot of people that i should be a model. its been said to me since year 8. in year 9 i decided i wanted to be one and mum and me went to a lady in another city to chat. she said my height of 173cm (5’8 1/2) wasnt capable of runway or high fashion. i feel like i could get there because Kate Moss is 5’7 and she managed to get high in the industry. my measurements are BUST: 33″ WAIST: 23.5″ HIPS: 33″.
Do you think i need a good trademark like some supermodel? (e.g. eyes, lips, face) or do you think i need to try really hard? i feel like this is what i want to be for the rest of my life.
i want to be high fashion, commercial, glamour(Victoria Secret) model. and im 15 🙂
    thankyou for your time

Hey Maddi!!! Glad to hear from you! You seem to fall within all of the “high-fashion measurements” and are certainly tall enough. I believe you can certainly do this and with some hard work, you will. You can start by getting some professional pictures taken and begin submitting them to local agencies. Getting an agency will be your first step!

    • Hello Selina!! I absolutely believe that you should go and become a model! At the very least, give it your best shot. You have good measurements and there are many types of modeling. I’m short I think 5′ 4” maybe. I’m going to loss wight, plan to not over that much. I had one of the smallest waists in my fabric and fashion class, I’m pretty sure about that.

    • Mya! There is no true way to know if someone has what it takes to “make it.” But, Simply going off your age, you are still good to go at 23. Moving to New York is a giant move and only necessary if your truly want to try your hand at the biggest stage modeling has to offer. There are a lot of modeling jobs there for sure, but there are also some of the worlds best models. Try modeling in your hometown locally first. New York is something you try when you feel you are ready.
