Should models workout? Would they be better models if they did? I may have a slightly biased perspective on the subject due to my success with fitness and modeling. Here are a few key examples of where being in great shape will greatly help men and women models alike book more modeling jobs.
Personally, I believe models should workout. I have earned many jobs simply because I was in better shape than my competition. Not because I was taller, more handsome, or funnier than the others, but because I looked better in the clothes. From casting to casting, I tried on the clothes and I filled them out. I wasn’t too strong or big, but I was toned and fit. This created a wonderful look in the clothing that the other models were not getting. This goes for women too. So by working out I was able to book jobs based on filling out clothes better than my competition.
Other scenarios where it comes in handy being in great shape are probably some of the most obvious: athletic wear, under garments, and swimwear. Pretty much any type of clothing that you can imagine will look better on someone who is in great shape. Take a lean, fit women with nice curves and compare her to a women who loves sweatpants and ice cream. Chances are, the woman in sweatpants eating ice cream will not look as good as the lean, slightly curvy, fit woman. So if you don’t workout and eat properly, you likely aren’t making the clothes look as good as they could. As I traveled through Asia I booked numerous jobs because I worked out. Like I stated earlier, I wasn’t overly big or strong. I simply looked ripped with my shirt off and yet lean in the clothing. There were hundreds of jobs for men and women alike where a good physique meant the difference between a job and waiting for the next casting i.e. swimsuit, sportswear, lingerie, bikini, underwear, jeans, athletic gear, skin products and the list goes on! I made my living off of these categories. They became my bread and butter, which is something that every established model will eventually do, find out what their niche is and do it well.
Another good example of how fitness will help any model, girl or boy, book more jobs is fitness modeling. I didn’t do a lot of it, but I did get some great jobs for fitness magazines and videos. Magazines like Men’s Health and Muscle and Body needed guys and women regularly for their articles. If you look good in gym clothes, you got a chance. The best part about this is that since fitness modeling wasn’t going to be my niche, it didn’t take away from my other modeling fields. I walked the line between being in great shape and strong, but not overly strong to where it hindered my ability to be diverse. I still did much catalogue and runway at the same time.
Aside from the models who have gotten too big and do not meet regular modeling measurements, there really is no reason for a model not to work out. It will only increase your success and profitability. You will book more jobs and catch the attention of more clientele. The goal is to look great naked and yet lean in the clothes.
Reference the modeling measurements article Requirements and Measurements for Modeling and even if you already meet these measurements, it is still a good idea to workout to stay fit and ahead of the competition. Just remember, there are models out there gunning for your spot. They want to be a model badly and are working out to get ahead of everyone and land more jobs. I know this to be true, because this is what I did.
