Many people ask me, “Jonah, do you happen to know how old I would need to be if I wanted to start modeling today?” And I always reply exactly like this, “why yes, yes I do, and if you will let me, I would love to write a short blog about it.” Now, in case you aren’t following, this is that blog. I will attempt to answer the questions… How Old To Be A Model? And How old is too old To Model?
Realistically, you can never be too young to model. There are baby models, child models, teen models, young adult models etc. and all can be used for catalog modeling, print modeling, commercial modeling, acting and so on. But when individuals ask, how old must you be to model, they are typically asking about fashion modeling. (Read more about the Age Requirements of Modeling!)
Fashion modeling is different because the style and audience is different. Many designers use sex appeal to sell clothes. This is no place for a 14-year-old, so young adults need to be careful. They may not be ready for this type of modeling. Also, it can affect their school work and other programs outside of modeling. This is why many agencies prefer their fashion models to be at least 16 years of age. But there are still these other areas of modeling that young adults can take part in. So to answer the first question of, How old should you be to start modeling? The answer is, whenever you’re ready, but a good standard is 16 years of age to start modeling.
The second part is, how old is too old to start modeling? The key word here is START. Many older models that you see today started modeling when they were young and simply continued to work into their thirties and sometimes forties, (this applies more to men than women as men seem to do better with age than women). Generally speaking, late thirties is going to be too old to start modeling. At this point, with no experience, their years of modeling are already limited.
So if you are a young adult who has been waiting for the right time to try your hand at modeling, perhaps that time is now, as long as you are ready (or your parents say you are ready). If you are an older male or female looking to get started, it may not be too late to try. However, if you are beyond your mid to late thirties, you may find this to be difficult.
Just remember to always keep your trust in the Lord and he will guide your path.
