How to Model Internationally!

How to become an international model!

Model Jonah Taylor in a Pierre Cardin ad shot in Taipei, Taiwan.

Every model has the dream of traveling and modeling for not only the country they live in, but to eventually travel the world.  They dream of modeling in all the major cities for all the high-end names and designers.  But how do you get started?  The answer may not be what you were thinking.  It may not be as hard as it seems.

So how could traveling the world as a model not be that hard?  Is there a secret way to get going and bypass much of the headache and pain associated with becoming a successful, professional model?  Well, Yes.  There are actual agencies that take care of this for you (of course you still need to be a good model to start with).  Often times called placement agencies, these agencies have established relationships with agencies in other cities around the world.  It usually works like this: a model will apply to one of these placement agencies just like they would apply to any other modeling agency.  If accepted (the agency will let you know if you have what it takes or not, check out Characteristics of an International Model), the placement agency will begin to send your info and stats to foreign agencies across the world.  It comes down to the foreign agency that needs a model with your build.  They have to want your look and not already have someone who fits it.  Once and if a foreign agency is interested, they will begin talks with your placement agency (which will later be known as your Mother agency).  A model will likely have to send more measurements and perhaps a video so that the foreign agency can decipher if the model is worth spending the time and money on.  If all goes well, that model will soon be on their way to a new city for a few weeks, or up to a few months (check out What to expect as an international model).  One of my favorite placement agencies is CommenceQuest in New York City.

The best way to get going is to search a few international placement agencies and find out which ones have the best connections.  One great aspect to placement agencies is that you typically do not have to live near them (unless they act as a local agency as well).  Their job is to place you in cities and industries around the world.  You may live in Kansas but have a placement agency in NY.  This is unlike regular modeling where you will likely need to be close to your agency for castings/auditions and jobs etc.

Of course there is more to understanding what it takes to modeling internationally, but this blog was written for one purpose, to inform models of how to do it.  If you are a beginner model or have been modeling for a while, it may be a good idea to try some international modeling.  This is a great way to gain experience and exposure as well as connections in the modeling world.  Give it a shot and see if you have what it takes to be an international model.  You will never know unless you try.  Good luck!

Just wanted to know if the mother agent pays everything for you when you go international

In all of my international travel, the mother agency paid for my flights and the signing agency paid for my accommodations. I then worked for however long my contract was for and tried to pay it all off, and hopefully still make some money. But I never had to pay for anything out of pocket. I know some agencies are not willing to take this much risk and will ask that you, the model, provide the flight or up front costs, but I would try to negotiate this so that you can work it off instead!

Hey Angie, Thanks for commenting on the Blog:) It sounds like you have all of the intangibles necessary to be a model, aside from a little direction. You should start getting some professional pictures taken and start submitting them to local agencies. Ask them about travel? You can also check out this blog: How To Become A Model, Part:1 Enjoy!!!

There are many good agents around the world, but the best ones are the ones that believe in you.

Hi! I am 17 years old and I have a contract with a model agency. I am tall and have a good body, but lately I’m not so sure if I have what it takes, especially because of my face. I know that you must have a beautiful face with a good proportionality. The agency has not sent me anything or contacted me either? Is this normal? What do you think I should do?

Hey there Alexandra, that’s not too abnormal. I have more than one agency and sometimes I do not hear from for months at a time. I would simply call them and ask them what you can do to improve your chances? Is there anything you can do to earn more modeling jobs?

A young inexperienced lady. Natural and willing to unleash fresh potential. If I can imagine it I might as well be it. Lead by potential why fear the outcome. Living in south africa ,pretoria. Would do anything to get a title in modelling currently 17. I want to do this For my family and myself as well not only that but to represent my country. I want to take my family from where we are to somewhere big…thank you

Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is fundamental and everything.
However imagine if you added some great photos or video clips to give
your posts more, “pop”! Your content is
excellent but with images and clips, this blog could undeniably be
one of the most beneficial in its field. Good blog!
