How To Start Modelling

Jonah Taylor Male model of Pierre cardinHow To Start Modeling – 3 Steps On How To Get Into Modelling. Not everyone takes the same path toward becoming a model. Some people are picked up off the street, some start off as children, some simply know the right people, and then there are the majority of us that must seek out the lifestyle for ourselves. If you are reading this, then you are probably part of the majority wondering how to get into modelling on your own.

Well may this blog be enough to get you started because in it I am going to layout the critical steps toward becoming a successful model.  Like I stated in my previous blog “FAQ’s about Modeling Agencies,” more than likely, the first step you will need to take is:

  • Getting some photos taken by a professional photographer. This isn’t a hard step, but it is a little involved. If you don’t know of any photographers, you can always contact the agency you are interested in (or any for that matter) for some good photographers they like and use; or you can search for photographers in your area on your own.

This part will cost a little money. It’s alright though, because this is a return investment. You will need a solid book of photos (a portfolio) in order to make good money. If possible, ask about stock photography (photographers who shoot you for free and sell the photos on their own). This won’t cost you anything and you will hopefully get some good photos our of it.

  • Secondly, you will need to submit these photos to some agencies. Start with the best agencies and work your way down. Do a little research on the agencies in your area to figure out which ones take care of their models the best. A good idea before you actually submit to any agencies is to figure out which field you would fit into best. Are you going to be a fit model? Are you on the tall side and looking to get into runway? What about commercial modeling and catalog?

Some agencies do a little bit of everything, and some specialize in certain fields. But if you know what area you are looking to get into, find that agency and impress the crap out of them. If they don’t accept you initially, keep trying, don’t quit, and get more photos until they do accept you; or move to another city.

  • That leads us to the third step, which is: Building your modeling portfolio. As you do more photo shoots and jobs, whether paid or not paid, you will begin to build a prestigious book. If you do any photo shoots, make certain to get the photos. Likewise, any job that you do, make sure you get the finalized work. These are your tear sheets that prove to everyone that you are a working model.

It is a lot easier for a client to pick a model that has proof of success, than to take a chance on someone who has limited photos. No photos means no experience. Do yourself a big favor and shoot often. Like I said, paid or not, the more photos you have, the more valued you are. Often times, when it comes to getting jobs, it doesn’t matter how attractive you are, it matters what you have done.

So we all understand that not everyone takes the same path toward becoming a successful model. But even those lucky few who get picked up by an agency while picking their nose on a side street in LA still need to perform steps one and three! So you are only one step away from them!

If you are wondering how to start modeling, all you need to do is: set up some photo shoots and get some good photos; find your field of modeling and submit yourself to agencies in this field; and thirdly, build your portfolio up by adding and adding photos/tear sheets so your track record speaks for itself and everyone cries tears of happiness because you are so talented.

Of course there is more to modeling than these 3 simple steps, but these are enough to get you going.  In the end, just take a step toward your goal every single day and you will find yourself fulfilling a dream. Faith, and these three steps can help make it happen.

Respectfully,

Jonah Taylor
