Is 5’6″ Too Short To Model?

Is 5’6" too short for modeling?

For many who haven’t been blessed with the requisite height commonly needed to thrive in the modeling industry, pursuing a career in this field can be exceptionally challenging. There are prescribed measurements for male models and for female models after all. However, if you’re 5’6" or even a bit shorter than that, don’t lose hope just yet.

Different avenues

We mentioned before that there are various niches of modeling, so if you’re not good for one, then you’re always free to pursue a career in the industry in some other way. As far as height requirements go, these are really important for editorial or runway modeling. If you’re willing to try other avenues apart from those, you might have a chance even despite your lack of height.

Try print ads, or do your best to get booked for TV commercials. You might even possess some exceptional body parts (hands, eyes, etc.) and you can even be a model using those, too. Acting is a great way to into the entertainment industry if you find that height is a problem. There are hundreds of “Talent Agencies” that accept both models and actors, so you can try one of these.

Location, location, location

There’s no shortage of height-blessed individuals in the States, so the competition is always tough. There are foreigners coming in as well. If you feel like you’re not getting a fair shot here because of your height, you might want to try other countries.

In Asia, for example, the physique of people are not as towering as in the US, and the models there can get away with being shorter. If you’re not averse to some air travel, then this is a good route for you.

Sign with lesser-known agencies that take chances

Unless you really have some incredible X-factor, chances are that big agencies will be reluctant to even look at your comp card once they see the height measurement, let alone sign you up. Still, if you’re diligent enough, you will be able to find a firm that would be willing to represent someone of your stature.

While it’s not as surefire as landing a gig at the well-known agencies, starting out small can help you get the footing you need to move up in the industry. You have to start somewhere, right? Just be careful out there, though—sometimes, people pose as representatives of small agencies just to exploit you or get money from you.

Tweak your expectations

What’s important if you’re 5’6" is to make sure that your expectations are tempered right from the get-go. It’s going to be tough, and what’s accessible to you as a model might be limited and not in line with what you want to pursue. Unfortunately, this is the truth.

We’ve established that height is indeed an important asset in modeling. However, don’t get too discouraged in case you, uh, fall short in this particular measurement. 5’6" is slightly below the cusp for females, while it’s a considerable distance from the male norm. Still, there are many ways to break into the industry if you’re a bit vertically challenged, so it’s up to you to find which route best suits your talents, your physique, and your preferences.
