Male Models: Runway Requirements and Measurements

Jonah Taylor - Male Runway ModelMale Models: Runway Requirements and Measurements

As far as aspiring male runway models are concerned, you could say that the requirements are pretty clear-cut. After all, this is a live gig, not for print or TV, so there won’t be any camera tricks, photo editing, or good angles to offset certain physical attributes. That said, here are some of the figures you’ll need to keep in mind in case you want to get on that runway.

Height

The ideal height is between 6′ flat and 6’2”. Of course, check the agency you’re trying to get into, since some agencies do take 5’10” or 5’11” guys. Anything considerably shorter or taller will definitely be noticeable on the runway. You might think this is a bit absurd since you’re walking by yourself anyway.

Well, for one, you’re not walking by yourself, as there will be other models to share the runway with. Just imagine the next guy being a full 6’2”, he’ll instantly stand out. This can also happen when you’re with female models, since they usually wear heels. Just think about how awkward it would look when you’re posing together.

Weight and Build

Weight can be a bit harder to assess on people, because it really depends on how you look and weight requirements vary from agency to agency.  Though the emphasis will be more on how an individual looks, a safe number might be around 170 pounds, something between the range of 160 to 180, give or take a few pounds.

When it comes to build, make sure you keep your body lean and healthy. Muscles and toning won’t hurt, as long as you maintain a healthy balance between the muscle and the leanness of your body. If you beef up too much or if you’re too skinny, you might not be able to bring out the best in the outfits you’ll be made to wear on the catwalk.

It’s Not Always What’s Written on the Card

We’ve mentioned the ideal height for the runway earlier in the article. Sometimes, though, agencies can make an exception for certain guys who possess particular qualities. You might find 5’11” or even 5’10” guys walking the runways, but usually, talents that come up a bit short on the measurements manage to get gigs because they offer something extra.

It could be their looks, charm, or attitude, or the clothes might simply look really, really good on them—and those are the possible reasons why they were picked despite not actually fitting the bill. If you feel like you’ve got some uncanny charisma and a real knack for pulling off outfits, don’t let your height stop you from trying out for runway gigs.

It’s no secret that the catwalk can be very picky, and this shows in the measurements and requirements for male runway models. Think you’ll fit in nicely? Go give runway modeling a shot! If your measurements don’t match, don’t get discouraged—there are still other modeling paths you can pursue, or you can still try the runway and maybe you’ll showcase something that the agency simply can’t overlook.

That’s interesting! Only a few years ago, when I was more active in advertising, most agencies turned down guys who were above six feet tall. Times change, I guess! Of course we still hear agencies telling guys that they’re too muscular.

Most male models have never been under 6ft. They’re not 6’4″, but their certainly not mostly 5’9″ -5’10”.
