What Makes a High Fashion Model?

How to become a High-Fashion ModelWhen it comes to modeling, everyone immediately thinks of High-Fashion Models, and why not?  They work in the fast paced, always changing, lucrative modeling genre of High Fashion.  So if it’s so great, why don’t all models do it?  Why don’t all models become high fashion models where they can make big bucks, travel internationally, and model as their full-time job?  The answer is… most models can’t.  High fashion models are, for lack of a better phrase, a breed of their own.  They fall into a unique and specific mold that is admired by clients.  They have specific measurements, looks, and personalities.  But even with all that said, what really makes a high fashion model?

  • High Fashion models are slightly set apart from the rest of the modeling genres.  The measurements and standards that High Fashion Models must fit into are extremely strict (See Modeling Measurements and Requirements).  Majority of people in the world do not fit these measurements.  Models must be tall and slender without being clumsy or awkward.  It is these measurements that truly separate a model, from a high fashion model.

  • Not only do they have to meet ridiculous measurements, but they must also photograph well (See How To Be More Photogenic) and have a good Runway walk (See How to Walk the Runway).  High fashion models perform a lot of runway.  So it is imperative that they know how to do so with attitude and style.  Likewise, they take a lot of photos, so they must know their best angels and photograph comfortably.
  • I suppose this goes without saying, but like all great models, high fashion models must have a great and unique look.  They have to bring something new, something different, to the table.  What good would it do to have 10 models who all look identical walk the runway?  The clothing would eventually look boring and dull.  But add new models with new features and styles and suddenly the clothing appeals once again.

What makes a High-Fashion ModelNow it’s only when you put all these details together that you get a really successful high fashion model.  A man or woman who meets the specific measurements, is available to up and leave, photographs and walks the runway well, as well as has a unique and exciting look has a great opportunity at becoming a high-fashion model.  This isn’t to break anyone down.  If high fashion isn’t for you, there are numerous other modeling fields outside of high fashion such as: commercial, beauty, fitness, cosmetic, swimsuit and underwear etc.  The world of high fashion is a restrictive one.  Only a lucky few (if you consider them lucky) will get the chance to model at this level.

There’s really good info, in this article! Being comfortable within your own skin is a big part of it. Of course, physical stats have a lot to do with it, as well!
