In this day and age, it is easier to model than ever before. There are hundreds of thousands of models in the world. This is largely due to the fact that photographers shoot digitally and have the incredible tool, photo-shop. Back when, photographers would shoot with film and that meant money with every click of the camera. So you best believe the models had to be great because the number of shots were limited. But that’s not what this blog is about. This blog is about open-calls and whether or not you should attend one?
In the world, there are millions of potential models that have not been discovered yet. Agencies use open calls to find these hidden treasures. An open call is a set time by an agency where everyone and anyone who is interested in modeling can show up and get looked at by that specific agency. For example, say this website was a modeling agency called Modeling Wisdom and Talent. We might hold an open call on Saturday at 11am. Anyone who thinks they have what it takes and is interested may show up. Modeling Wisdom agents would then meet with them (sometimes one on one and sometimes as a group), take a look at any photos and possibly their runway walk; at which point we would let them know if we are interested in signing them or not. It is not a personal thing, agencies have lots of models and may have models that fit your look already. Even if they like you, they may ask you to come back in a few months.
If you don’t have an agency yet, or do but are looking to get into a better one, an open call might be exactly what you need. Many bigger agencies set these up regularly as they have lots of potential models trying to sign with them. So instead of setting up single appointments, they schedule one and invite everyone. If you are going to be attending an open call, make sure to bring your portfolio if you have one and dress nicely. You want to impress them. Make it hard for them to pass on you.
So open-calls are meetings set up for aspiring models to get signed. You can find open-call information by going on specific agency websites. They will often have open-calls listed or you can email them and they will inform you of their times. Agencies are always looking for the next big thing and that big thing might be YOU! So dress nicely and go prepared. If they do not sign you, try another agency or you may try again and again with the same one until they give you a chance. Either way, do not give up and hit up these open-calls until you get yourself an agency.
